SNC-1 Project

Tue Feb 03, 2015 10:09 pm

I'm looking for information on any SNC-1 or CW-22 projects. I know of Fanasy of Flights, Evergreens, Istanbul Air Force Museum, National Museum of Naval Aviation, and Asociación Amigos del Museo Aeronautico. I'd like to return one to flight.

Hey Conrad, there is one last one on a pole at the entrance to the Military Polytechnic of Aeronautics in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I always think someone can modify a Yak to look like one !? Good Luck, you never know what's stashed away out there !

A win-win situation would involve new-build replicas, using a pattern airframe (which in turn could be restored).

The CW-19, CW-22, SNC-1 family aircraft really look best with the lower profile canopy sported on the civilian and non-navy models.

The retractable landing gear appears to have come in two different forms: the most apparent configuration having the fairings under the wings (like a P-40), and the lesser seen configuration involving the wheels retracting towards the center-line of the fuselage (as seen on the CW-21B). It would really be interesting to see a CW-22 fitted with the cleaner landing gear as seen on the CW-21B.

Curtiss-Wright CW-23 [NX19427] also appears to be fitted with the lesser known landing gear configuration. http://www.aerofiles.com/cw23.jpg

Now, as far as a restoration/operator's standpoint, the fixed landing gear on the CW-19R would probably be safer, and less of a headache to deal with, and still retain a classy look.

Few production trainers retained such petite, slender looking fuselages. They were some of the most elegant looking aircraft made by Curtiss in the inter-war years.

Classic Wings #92 covered all known survivors, the only current project I am aware of is the one in Uruguay.

Yeah, what Taylor said times ten! I absolutely love the Demon and have one of my own in the planning stages. Of course mine will be a bit smaller than what Conrad has in mind! :( I imagine the two-seat variants would be much more desireable for somebody looking to restore or replicate in full size but the CW-21 fighter would really garner some attention at the airport! (My attention at least.) Anyway, I would love to see you carry this one through to the finish Conrad as they are all beautiful and under represented machines.

Wilman Fuentes, from the Uruguayan group "Asociacion de Amigos del Museo Aeronautico" a.k.a. "Ratones de Hangar" (Hangar Mice) has published reports on the progress of the restoration work of their SNC-1 airplane with us at laahs.com (shameless plug!!!!)
