Wed Feb 04, 2015 7:25 pm

The following lists are of aircraft that were offered through the DOD Surplus Catelog venue. These military aircraft remains are essentually broken up scrap - not being offered as a possible flyer. I thought maybe those WIX members that are looking for a souvenir or are parts collectors may find the lists useable. For full explanation of subject, please refer to same title above, except use - 1970.

Are those the gondolas that ended up with Kermit Weeks?

Been waiting for this one to come up. Must have been moved from the NAEC at Mustin Field in Philadelphia sometime between '76 and '81, where it had been used for dead-load catapult testing. Here's a photo and info from 1967:

Note the placard in front: "Old Model Aircraft Used As Test Vehicles".
And as it appeared in Air Classics in February 1976:

My understanding was the Navy was shipping Savage from Philadelphia along the coast by barge to the Naval Museum in Pensacola, but don't know why aircraft only made it to Norfolk. I inspected aircraft which was up for sale a few months earlier. Upon inspection, I noted steel plates welded together in bomb bay and found out they weighed 10,000 pounds. I believe these were used for ballast while traversing by barge down coast. I am not a welder and the task of reducing the weight would have been major problem - at least for my feeble attempts. At any rate I am passing along a couple more photos that Chris will add.... :(

Thanks to Leon (Woodsy Airfield), we have likely the last images of XAJ-1 Savage 121460, on May 23, 1980:

"Bomb bay loaded with 10,000 lbs. of iron for ballast, welded in place while aircraft was at Philadelphia"

(I've scanned a bunch of the photos and will add them to their respective threads. Some good stuff in there!)

"Fortunately Army serial is legible in photo - 76096, an early Huey. It was originally designated HU-1A before 1962."
Early is right - 57-6096; it's the second Huey ever built.
