Old Engine ID Help

Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:56 pm

Our group recently acquired a photo collection of photo's at an early USCG aviation engine school at Norfolk, VA. We were able to date the photo's to Nov 1939. The below engines would be earlier then that of course. Does anyone know what model these engines are? I had a guess but wanted to see if anyone recognized these old ones. The front two look a little similar but one maybe missing parts. The back one looks smaller. Thanks.

I'm no expert but I think the one in the background is a Wright J 5 or J 6 with part of the exhaust ring sectioned. The front two look like Pratt and Whitney to me maybe early R 985s or 1340s.

Hmmm...could be. I had someone else think the big one was a Wright-Cyclone 1820. I was going on a limb and thinking 1830 but probably not after looking around. There were many variants out there of 1820's.
