Pearl Harbor, Iwo CGI Friday nite

Fri Nov 18, 2005 12:56 am

Just a heads-up..
Friday night the History Channel is premiering 2 programs starting 8PM
Central, running back-to-back. The titles, "Pacific:The Lost Evidence-Pearl
Harbor" in the 1st hour, with "Iwo Jima"in the 2nd hour. As I understand
it, they'll be recreating the locations utilizing "period aerial photos" and
overlaying them on 3-D contour maps in order to create a CGI "model".
This enable us to view the battles from an air-overview.

It might be interesting if they don't "hinky" with the history too much...it
certainly will be interesting to see the 3-D effect of the photos and what
archival film they come up with.

Despite the nice maps, there were so many historical errors in the "Pearl Harbor" show it made me sick. I give the show a three on a scale of ten.

A number of historical blunders include:

1. the wrong "dress" for sailors.

2. Torpedo exploding under the Arizona

3. Wrong times for a number of battle events

4. Torpedo and bomb hits on the battleships are only from first salvage estimates which are not as accurate as later analysis.

5. Smoke pouring out of Ford Island's northern end, rather than Hangar Six on the south end.

6. ...I shall stop here while I puke...

Thanks for the heads up! I guess they couldn't afford more CGI so they went to the canned T6/Zero footage. :?
