C-130A Engine Logs

Hello WIX'ers,

Where would one look for engine logs for a C-130A? The Smithsonian does not have them. I just contacted Maxwell AFB, in hopes of them having something. If not, what other avenues shall I explore?

They are documented on AFTO 95's which stay with the individual engines when they are removed and placed into storage. If the engines are installed, the 95's are kept the in the aircraft jacket file for the aircraft the engine is installed on. When the engines are disposed of, the 95's are typically destroyed.

Is said manuals are not in the plane (they aren't), where else could they be? The one we're after does not have them.

There numerous forms that go with an engine.....AFTO 95, AFTO 44, 781J, etc.

It's possible Allison (now under Rolls Royce) may have some historical info if they were doing the overhauls back then. Other option is the Lockheed historian might be able to help.

For the Air Force, The Command Engine Manager is located at Tinker AFB. I seriously doubt that any records would still be in the data base for a C-130A since the Air Force got rid of them a long time ago. Are you talking about an individual engine or an entire C-130A (4 installed engines)?

The other thought too is there's manuals (-1, 2-1, -4, etc) and then there's logs and records. If manuals those should be out there somewhere on a CD. Logs and records for an old Herc....got to look deep for those. Microfiche with a manufacture historian maybe if they did the overhauls on 130A's???

I just saw your post on the Herc website. Now I know which Herc you are talking about (Lockheed C-130A, serial number 57-0460). When that plane was delivered to the Smithsonian, it should have been delivered with a full aircraft jacket file including the AFTO 95's for each engine. Unless they disposed of the jacket file (they shouldn't have), the Smithsonian has it. It is either on the aircraft in a box or the NASM has it stored in a file cabinet someplace.

At any rate, I'm glad to hear the airplane is being saved. She has a unique history and I was disappointed that the NASM decided several years ago not to display her...

Thanks, APG! You've been most helpful. The sad news is, the NASM are the ones who told us the logs are missing. So, either they lost them, or they were destroyed. However, we remain optimistic!
