Navy to search for Avro Arrow scale models

Fri Jun 25, 2004 5:33 pm

I came across this news article today:

Do you think that the Canadian Navy will need a permit to recover the models if they decide to do so????

Last year Ed Burtt's Ocean Scan team recovered this section of the Nike boost rocket from Lake Ontario to prove they know the direction of the launchs and trajectory. This photo was taken the day before they donated it to the RCAF Museum at Trenton. I remember seeing scans that looked like the Arrow models on the Lake bottom so I'm sure he already knows where they are.

You can read a little more about Ocean Scans Arrow project at this link

He also has the location of a Handley Page Shark off the shore from CFB Trenton. I know he mentioned the military have tried looking for the Shark themselves but for whatever reason will not work with Ed on the recovery.

Mini-105s and a mysterious Shark

Fri Jun 25, 2004 6:07 pm

Hi Eric--

Your pic of the Burtt-recovered Nike rocket chunk is doing the usual superimposition trick over your text...but still I can see the ref to OceanScan's reported find of a Shark in the Bay of Quinte. This one has mystified me for a while. The pix on their site could be of a Shark, it's hard to tell; but the one they think it is was actually hauled out of the bay soon after she crashed...and the bird in the lake is on wheels, while the ditched-and-recovered Shark was on floats!

In any case, I hope OceanScan and/or the CF Navy are successful in bringing these artifacts (Arrow models/possible Shark) to the surface for eventual display. A restored Shark would be an extraordinary sight parked in RCAFM's intended new hangar alongside the Halifax...One can hope!

Steve,

You have jogged my memory of the Shark thing, I think we talked about this on our trip to Ottawa.
