F9F-2 Panther s/n 123557 USN

Sun May 31, 2015 5:33 pm

This plane is mounted on a post at the VFW post in Janesville, WI. I have a problem with this ID, as the ejection history, USS Midway history page says this plane went into the water. This would mean that the plane was recovered. Does anyone have any ideas? Is the Janesville bird just marked as the one in the water or was it recovered?

Glenn,

First, welcome to WIX. I would tend to agree that the odds of this aircraft actually being BuNo 123557 are indeed slim given the narrative of it going "into the water" while operating off USS Midway. There were no heavy lift helicopters available and one would think that getting a ship alongside before it sank in order to lift it aboard is sketchy. You could order a copy of the accident report from Craig Fuller at http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/ to discover whether the aircraft was recovered or was a total write-off.

Beyond that, perhaps either someone with specific knowledge of this aircraft or someone who knows where to locate the data plate will chime in. Then, it's just a matter of a tall ladder and gaining access inside. Simple, right?

Again, welcome aboard!

Hi Craig!

Well, I just looked at the aviation archaeology site, and searched the data base, and this plane did not come up.

So much for THAT idea!

Glenn,

Just drop them an email stating the accident date of 11NOV51, aircraft type, and pilot name. They'll look it up on their microfilm, tell you how many pages long it is, and quote you a price based upon that. Very reasonable, usually in the $20-30 range and emailed via a PDF within a week or two.

All the Navy reports are not in the online database because they have not been indexed yet,
but he may still have a report for it. send an email request with as much info as you can.
