I just did a great interview with Neil Hansen who was an Air America C-123 pilot, and all around cool guy. The article is going to be in the NMUSAF magazine called the Friends Journal. a nice rare keep sake with history. think if that tag / instrument could talk, it could tell some great stories. i'd bet some air america collector would give you 50 bucks for it.

That's fascinating, Mark. Probably a silly question, but do you feel that the history of that particular airplane would be considered a major selling point of it, or did the new owner not really seem interested in it?

We (NatCapSqn) have one of those on a magneto. Our BT-13A was owned for many years by a fellow by the name of Fred Walker Sr, chief pilot for AAM out of Vientiene.

So, there's a BT flying, with an Air America connection. Maybe I'm a geek, but I think stuff like this is neat!

We do indeed have a Caribou now, in fact I'm the one who found it and bought it from the scrap yard As you mentioned "389" is indeed an actual Air America veteran, but her place in history goes much deeper than that. As it turns out, "389" was the last Air America bird to leave Laos when operations ended!

And Jase, it's funny you mentioned Fred Walker, as he was actually flying "389" on the above mentioned final flight from Laos!

The recovery of "389" is still ongoing, and we should have her out of the scrap yard next weekend. I'll be posting pics of the recovery efforts soon, stay tuned!

I think the new owner was specifically looking for a T-28 at the time, and the Air America history may have "influenced" which T-28 was purchased.

Fellow wing member, author, “Full Throttle”, former JAL Captain and former Air America pilot John Deakin told me that he absolutely, positively, hated the movie Air America. John flies several of our planes among them our Zero and C-46. John also flew C-46s in Asia. You have to read his book. I think that I will stick a yellow tag on him as he qualifies as an antique!
