The Mid America Flight Museum at the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on weekends, by appointment.

The flight museum is the brainchild of Scott Glover. Glover, longtime pilot and vintage aircraft collector, is the museum’s founder and director.

Matt Bangers, who does maintenance for the museum, said the Mid America Flight Museum is open even though it’s not built, yet.

Bangers was working in the 100-plus degree heat Wednesday on the towering hulk of an Air Force Grumman Albatross air-sea rescue plane.

“In two to three months - by November,” he said, “we’ll have a standing building with a tent. But we are actually open now.”

He said the museum’s planes are parked in five different hangars for people to view, and the mighty Grumman Albatross is just too big to fit inside any of the hangars.

The Albatross used to be used a lot for air-sea rescue, but was replaced by the helicopter, Bangers said.

The museum will be big enough to house the Albatross, Bangers said, but until then, the plane’s without a roof.

Adjacent to where Bangers and a crew work on the Albatross, four construction workers are busy measuring and wrestling with spirals of clear piping.

The construction crew is laying pipe, Bangers said, so that the floor of the building can be heated.

The workers should be able to pour the second half of the floor next week, he said.

“After that, they’ll put the steel up. We’re not weather-based now so we expect the work to go quickly,” he said. “It won’t be long until we have a standing building.”

Now, people can walk through the different hangers to tour the museum’s offerings, he said.

“We’ll talk them through at first and then they can do a self-tour, and we’re here to answer questions,” he said.

Bangers said the museum has already seen a lot of traffic and drawn a lot of interest from across the country.

For the museum - well - the sky’s the limit from here on out.

Any organization that preserves a HU-16 in USAF ARS colors is all right by me.

They need a H-19 to go along with the Grumman.
