Aircraft Marking sizes (Serial #, Squadron/Tail Codes)?

Thu Oct 15, 2015 9:14 pm

Hey guys, been doing a lot of research on the specifics of markings for our C-47 as we have begun painting it, but I have been having a hard time finding info for sizing of these markings. Below I have listed the three main sites I have used to try and figure this out...

I have used this page for most of my info for non-insignia related markings
http://www.scribd.com/doc/230179468/Sch ... -47#scribd

Insignia info
http://www.bowersflybaby.com/stories/army_paint.html

Insignia info as well as marking info
https://books.google.com/books?id=G30-A ... ze&f=false

* I read online that the Squadron code ranged from 30 inches to a max of 48 Inches. Can anyone confirm this?
(http://www.airbornetroopcarrier.com/c47markings.html)

* tail code letter?
Cant really find anything on this at all. It looks like it might be 1.5-2ft tall?

* serial number?

Each Army Air Force airplane (including training types), regardless of whether equipped with radio,was to be identified. The call numerals composing the airplane designator were to be of the vertical block type,the width two-thirds of the height and the strokes approximately one inch(2.54cm)wide for every six inches(15.24cm) of height. The distance between the letters was to be equal to half the width of a letter. Height of numbers to be such that the radio call tail designator will be readily discernible from a distance of approximately 150 yards
(found on page 45/46 of the first link listed as well subsequent pages of the revisions as time progressed)

On the third link above on page 7-9 it states that non tactical aircraft should have 1 ft high call numbers or as close to 1ft as possible if it can not fit 1ft; with all of the spacing and width specs from the above quote included as well.

After looking at photos, my guess was that call numbers were approx 1ft high, but can this be confirmed thought it seems to be?

Note to myself: Page 8-20 through 8-22 for insignia and lettering on third link
Page 148, C-53 markings and sizes on first link

It might help the experts here if you mentioned what year you were trying to replicate.
Also, what numbered AF.
Remember, things changed over time.

September of 44 is when the plane came off the line and the paint scheme is more or less is being finished in its final June 45 appearance prior to returning home post VE Day.
