Curtiss electric pitch change units

Sat Jan 16, 2016 1:07 pm

Hi ,
Does anyone on here Know about Curtiss electric pitch change units , [that is the motor and gearbox].
Are they all the same or are the units for 3 blade props different than the units for 4 blade props, I've a chance of a complete unit and I need to know if it's suitable
For P-47 Thunderbolts .
The only I.D on it is SER75920 is it possible to I.D it from that ? .
I've a couple of booklets on Curtiss electric props but it does not mention in any of them if they are the same . I've also checked the P-47 parts book but that just lists the whole prop as an assembly.
Any help on this would be great.
Best regards Station 342

I have a service manual in my library at home but am traveling for a couple of days. I'll check when I can. This site may offer some help in deciphering the markings:

The old CAF FM-2 Wildcat that I few for several years had a Curtiss Electric prop.

According to the War Department issued TM1-412 propeller manual the chief differences between the 3 blade unit and the 4 blade unit are in the units brake construction. There is no mention of whether it will physically interchange between hubs. Will also look further as time permits to see if I can find something on that.

Hi guy's,
Thank's any info at all may help in identifying suitability of the Unit , I'd prefer it to be suitable for P-47 use even if it ends up only on a static prop assembly.
I have spinner and a couple of blades and I hope a couple more blades and a hub may turn up in the future.
