Grumman Mohawk cockpit parts wanted

Wed Feb 03, 2016 6:21 pm

Hello, I will be road tripping the western half of the US in the next couple of months and am looking for suggestions on shops/dealers/surplus yards/men in sheds etc where I may potentially find Mohawk parts. This is to aid in the cockpit restoration of 60-3757, a Vietnam veteran.
Thanks in advance
Paul

Paul,

A friend of mine has a complete new-old-surplus Mohawk throttle quadrant assembly for sale. I'll PM you his contact info.

I don't know if it still exists or not, but the American Wings Museum in Anoka, MN had several Mohawks in their ramp, in different states of completeness. Maybe that would be a good place for the parts you seek? Last time I was there, was 2003.

Saludos,

Tulio

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, the American Wings museum is now closed and I have not been able to contact anyone associated with it which is a pity as I believe they had the largest supply of Mahawk parts in the world!

Have you tried contacting American Wings' next-door neighbo(u)r? Perhaps they'd be a source of contact clues.

American Wings Air Museum is still around, they lost their large hangar so their stuff is spread all around ANE. Several Contact Email addresses here:

Paul the American Wings museum lost their museum/hangar a few years ago and now just operate out of the maintenance hangar which is just across from my hangar. I know some of the guys casually and they are almost always there on Saturdays. Most other days are a hit and miss if anyone will be there, they're not staffed every day.
I'll try and get out to the airport this weekend and ask if I can have a contact number.
They do have airframe parts as seen from these photos I took last winter. I don't know what other kinds of parts they may have on stock.
I think they have 5 or 6 stripped airframes on the back row in the photos, and at least 2 more up front, one of which is flyable.

Great information. I've emailed them and 'liked' their facebook page so hopefully I will make contact. Champ driver Jim a contact number would be appreciated but please only go out to the airport if you have other business, it is not an urgent quest.

I was there last summer and I can verify that the Mohawk are definitely still there, I took pictures of them, I think there were 3 near the museum and another 6-8 back by the trees. I'm not sure what one would have to do to acquire parts from them but I bet they'd have what you need

I went out there this weekend on both Saturday and Sunday and no one was around at the maintenance hangar. I only live 3 miles away so it's no big deal, I'll try again next weekend.

You could try contacting the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation in Hampton, GA. They used to operate two Mohawks and one is still on the field with a contractor. Google their contact info.

Two summers ago, there was an auction at Lago Vista , Tx . where there was a very nice Mohawk that was sold to a Gent from around Briggs- Watson area. Along with the aircraft, there was a large amount of spares that went with it, and also sold there. I ended up delivering a Fouga to his place N.E, of Round Rock. I bought a whole shelf of Fouga parts and ended up with a N.O.S. nose wheel for the Mohawk.....sits on my front porch.

There are, or were, several airframes stored on a piece of private property in Glendale, Arizona not too far from the Glendale airport. I have not personally put eyes on them in several years but they were there within the last 4-5 years I would guess. Some pics and information can be found in this thread: http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.o ... &start=135

At one time National Surplus in Tucson had 17 airframes.
