I did a bit of Googling and found this (scroll about half way down)

It says that they are about 57 feet long (shoulda been 58 ) and about five feet in diameter.

Nathan - I found a little more info on possible location of large lot of B-58 pods. Two outfits did a lot of surplus buying during 1970's...Munson Of Muncie, E. Wysor, Muncie Indiana and Hi-Way Service, N. Apperson, Kokomo, Indiana come to mind. Munson Of Muncie came up once in awhile buying surplus, but I don't have any other info as to what was bought. Hi-Way Service of Kokomo was the company that bought about 2 dozen helicopters from Aberdeen Proving Grounds and also 4 R-4360's from the scrapped B-36 formerly outside at Patterson (Parts now owned by Walt Soplata). A note I have indicates many B-58 Pods were located a little south of Grissom AFB. Kokomo is a little south of the base...This could be a clue as to where most of them wound up. I remember seeing a photo of this group - but don't recall any other info....Probably worth a search to verify...Leon

Humm. . . If they still belonged to the USAF and they really wanted them they would just go get them (IMHO) I mean look what happened to Lex and the Corsair. It would be kinda cool to have a B-58 pod but then what would you do with it?? It is only worth as much as someone else is willing to buy it for!

I don't understand the asking prices for some of this stuff.
Sure I can understand where you have an airworthy part...or core...for a type that is still being flown (Mustangs, Hueys and the like).
But to ask much more than scrap value for a part off a type that isn't being flown just seems silly unless the part is something that would look really neat in a collection like a prop, seat or control wheel.

I found a guy online that wants $5000 for a B-36 prop spinner. Again, that's kinda neat, but really what would you do with it?
Likewise, a guy is selling F-106 avionics...his theory seems to be "If it cost the govt. $XXX in 1963, it must be worth $XXX x2 now".

I've found this not just in planes/parts, but in a vast number of markets. High age =/= high value in and of itself. Sure, there's a limited supply, but there's also a very limited demand. I don't know how many times I've heard at various flea markets, etc., "it's probably the only one you'll ever see!" Yeah? Well I'm probably the only guy you're ever gonna find that wants it.

I totally agree - just because it is old does not make it automatically valuable. There are stamps that are really old but relatively common and/or hold little interest to the collectors and thus hold little value.

And one of the saddest things is after someone thinks they have a gold mine and it doesn't bring in what they convinced themselves it is worth they wind up scrapping the item in the end.

Hi Leon, do you still have a B-58 nose gear? If the Chanute plane is rescued it will need one.

Nathan, will you be checking out that F-84 in WV this spring?

I just got off the phone with the man that owns a bunch of B-58 parts. he said his grandfather and dad started collecting back in the 60's. He has gone all over the country trying to collect B-58 parts. He also has F-100 and F-84F parts. He has the tail turret, engine cones, fuel pod, weapons pod, and lots of other parts off of B-58's. He said he is gonna be selling them on ebay because the government says they still own them and want armed guards to watch the scrapping process. I don't understand that other then he said his family has been audited for years and got nothing back. This is land Im not familiar with if anyone wants to enlighten a dumb Pa hillybilly like me.

He said he will be selling the parts for very big $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Where's he at? PM or email if you don't want to post it here. I'm 1-1.5 hours from the Grissom/Kokomo area and will probably be over that way in the spring.

Hey Chris...I sold the B-58 nose gear 3 or 4 years ago to a gentleman in southern Indiana. He is trying to make a mobile-trailer mounted display for public displays, parades, etc. I recall he was looking into a nose section of a 'Hustler' located at Grissom. I haven't heard anything since.

WIXerGreg - The address I have is Hi-Way Service, 3812 N. Apperson, Kokomo. It sounds like - from what Nathan has told me - that you may be running up against a brick wall...Good luck to all...

As of right now the family does not trust anyone as they are having problems with people stealing stuff and the owners are checking every night. I told the family that I will no longer ask or research the parts in question and I ask everyone here kindly to do the same.
