18th Field Maintenance Squadron F-51D ...

Tue Mar 29, 2016 12:50 pm

... One for John Terrell. Noticed this photo on a p-51 facebook page this morning posted by Jim Escalle.

Here's some history:

"According to Warren Thompson, who wrote a book several years ago about F-51 units in Korea, this was perhaps the most unusual Mustang to serve in Korea. He said: "It consisted of parts salvaged from several battle-damaged F-51s by the 18th Field Maintenance Squadron at Chinhae. Constructed under the supervision of Major Milt Tarr, this perfectly airworthy Mustang was given the spurious code “FF-800," but it never officially appeared on the USAF’s inventory. The enlisted members of the 18th FMS presented the F-51 to the unit’s CO, Major Bill Myers, as a birthday gift, because he did not have his own aircraft. Not cleared for combat missions, the Mustang was instead used as a DT sprayer, the chemicals used to kill mosquito larvae during the hot summer months being released from the fighter’s matt black external drop tanks." (photo by Milt Tarr)"
