WW2 T-6 paint schemes

Sat Dec 10, 2005 7:32 am

Does anyone know if the Marines had yellow painted T-6s/SNJs?

Can someone post color pictures of Marine SNJs from WW2?

Thanks

Other than being pressed into use as a squadron hack, would any SNJs have been specifically assigned to a Marine flying squadron? Just as now, weren't all Marine Aviators trained in the Navy's pilot training program during WWII, therefore using SNJs with Navy markings?

You'll correct me if I'm wrong, but although they used BuN. aircraf, the Marines had their own aircraft. According to William T. Larkins book "US Marine corps Aircraft 1914-1959" There are lists of SNJ and BT-15's issued to the Marines during WWII.

In looking at the photo of N49939, I noticed the pilot's name is Pete Hunt. I knew a Pete Hunt as a Captain in the Navy and the skipper of NAS Atlanta 1990 or so. Is this the same guy?

Since you asked, the yellow scheme with the orange was usually a Navy post war reserve scheme. The post war Marines aircraft (at least the pictures I have seen) were a natural metal finish with a green band on the fuselage and wings.

Maybe Colonel Rob can come up with a picture in yellow, but I think the one listed above may be fictional, as sometimes owners or enthusiasts paint their aircraft in the service that they served with (?).

Dont think there were any yellow Marine SNJs. Some friends of mine painted the markings on the one in the pictures above. They said they made up the markings.

A possible source is " The Official Monogram of U S Navy and Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide 1940-1949 Volume 2" By John M Elliott, publisher Monogram Aircaft Publications. If anyone has access to a copy it may cover the SNJ Marine colors. I know it is pretty extensive in its coverage.
