help ID plane crash 3 July 1930

Sat May 14, 2016 10:32 am

I was given these photos of an unknown biplane that crashed and burned near Rio Vista California. Photos dated on the back 3 July 1930
Anyone know what type of plane it is?

Interesting strut design. That should be a big hint as to type.
Also, notice the steel tube fuselage and metal prop, it was a newer aircraft.
The engine isn't a cheap war surplus water cooled unit.

Got it!

It's a Spartan C3...I believe it has the Walter engine which would make it a C3-2.
The basic airframe used a variety of powerplants, but the cowl and vents match the Walter examples and not the more common J6-powered C3-165.
