Here's a series showing what I believe is a VF-48 F4U-4 landing mishap on the USS Oriskany CV-34. Not sure the date or location. can't quite tell if he went completely over and in the sea or if he got hung up over the edge. I'm think he got wet.

Wow, what amazing pictures. Really shows how risky and gutsy carrier ops can be.

I'm hoping that someone can provide some insight and either confirm or deny my thoughts, but I don't think this is an F4F. The cowl and canopy look wrong, and vacuum flaps wouldn't be down with the not running. Also it doesn't have folding wings (I think). Any keen eyes know what it is?

Very interesting shots. I always wondered not so much if the pilots were killed in photos like this, than I am curious how many wings were yanked off the flight suits afterward.
How many washouts were there from bad carrier landings, both forced and voluntary?
A pal of mine served on a carrier in the 90s and he said on every cruise, there seemed to always be one aviator who'd turn in their wings after a close call.
