Road trip

Today, I took the long-postponed trip down Highway 6, bound for Galveston, TX. here's a sampling of the photos that I shot:



First stop, the Sugarland Municipal airport, where Jet Provost XW322 /
N199ER (based at the Brazoria Co. Airport) was seen, after having had
the radios worked on and getting ready RTB.



Next stop was the Houston SouthWest Airport at Arcola; Piper J-3 C-65

N48528 / 259385.

Main destination was the Lone Star Flight Museum, in Galveston:



Tail turret of LSFM's Privateer.



The incorrectly titled AT-11 in Cuban markings, LSFM.



F8F Bearcat.



Lochkeed L-18, either serial 2525 or 2565...(there are two dymo labels on the tail area, listing the numbers indicated above).



Jolly Green / HH-3 Evergreen Helicopters N15EV Scholes Field.

From Galveston, it was North on Hwy 3 to Ellington Field:



F-84 at the VFW on Texas Hwy 3, across from Ellington Field.



NASA's Super Guppy N941NA



The second official shot taken with the new Canon 70-200, from some 300 ft. away, shows a lineup of NASA's Northrop T-38s.



Texas ANG F-101 Voodoo; there was no other way to shoot it than over the fence; impossible to shoot due to location, angle and distance, were an
F-16, an F-4, T-33 and possibly an F-102. Also seen, one of the "Vomit
Comets" now a gate guardian.

There is a very simple explanation for the oddball shot of the F-101:

Tall fence - short man - aim camera in the direction where you hope that you will catch the
airplane in somewhat of a full frame : )

Which, brings me to request: Does anyone here has photos of the aircraft that are either stored or on display at the Ellington ANG base? Please notice, I did not request photos of aircraft in service.

Tulio, about the L-18. I had the Dymo tags reading..
Lock L-18 2526...rather than 2525
Lock L-18 2565

We almost crossed paths yesterday...but I went sailing instead. Beauty
of a day..barefoot, shorts and a bote.

I thought 2526 was right, but looking at the top of the last digit, I had my doubts:



I went by the seawall and yest, it was a great day weatherwise!

The F-102 is there, Tulio. It's got a pole up it's a$$ and is displayed in an extreme climb angle. The others are all on their gear.

I thought that I had seen a Delta shaped wing and the typical shape of the Dart, but I was by then too far away and darkness was alredy creeping in.

One of the things that peeve me about MY airplanes (I have paid enough taxes to at least own a wheel or an aileron on some of them) on display at bases and such, is that it is such a pain in the butt to gain access to them.

I do not care one bit about the military installations or anything security related, and knowing that displays like these could very well help to generate some very specialized tourism, they should be placed in locations that are not security risky and easily accessible to those interested, while at the same time an adequate level of control over them can be kept, to deter vandalism.

Just my two centavos, and end of rant.

It was registered as N43WT to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame until April 12, 2005 when it was cancelled from the U.S. Civil Aircraft Registry with the the reason for cancellation given as Destroyed. See the book: "The Lockheed Twins" by Peter J. Marson.

Thanks for your time Todd...but that was the easy part. Does Marson
enlighten us as to the history of Lockheed c/n 2525(or 6)? Or, how the
significance of the upper Dymo tag-info applies to this bird? Is she a
composite of aircraft? Nice Exec interior, though Texas heat hasn't been
kind. Pretty decent outwardly-intact condition, for Destroyed!

Add this to the stuff from the rumors department:

I heard recently -source I cannot recall- that this particular Lockheed is coming home to where I live . . . now things are beginning to click, since I have seen what I believe are portions the twin tails stored in a nearby hangar...

More, if this is true, when I find out.

As a follow up to Todds reply the Lodestar was actually sold by the musuem several years ago after it was detemined to be a poor canidate for restoration due to the amount of work that it needed and the resulting amount of money that would have to be dumped into it.

It has traded hands several times since it was moved out ot he hanger. At one time the owners had contracted with a local mechanic to take it aprt so it could be shipped to another aiport for restoration and I believe the current rumor is that it is being stripped to be sold for parts.
