Surviving DC-2's

How many DC-2's survive today worldwide? I read where the Museum of Flight's DC-2 is now at Clay Lacy Aviation in California having some additional restoration work done on it before it heads to the museum in Seattle. Doesn't the Natl Museum of the USAF have a DC-2 in storage?

Hi Pat--

There is, I think, still a DC-2 displayed in Holland painted as the famous "Uiver" from the MacRobertson Race; and there's at least one in Australia.

The DC-2esque machine at Dayton is a C-39, which is a sort of "DC2.5", incorporating DC-2 wings and engines and a DC-3 fuselage and tail.

The DC-2 owned by the Aviodome in Holland is actually a flyer. I believe that there is another flyer in the US too. The Dutch Dakota Association apparently has a DC-2 in rough condition. There are at least two DC-2's in Australia. Strangely enough, Finland has one complete one, and at least one fuselage. I don't know how many are in the US, but I doubt there are more than four complete examples here (if that!).

I've got this in my files - sadly I can't recall the correct credit, the link I have with it is dead. No guarentrees as to currency, but it was broadly correct for when it's dated.

Does anyone know where the “Otis Spunkmeyer Air” example is actually situated? I may try and track it down one weekend if it's somewhere near SF.

Tyabb Australia one is now going to Moorabin Museum in Melbourne both Aus machines are scheduled to be restored as static soon - both hav some degree or corrosion that rules them out of flying without a LOT of money

The Aviodrome (note the name change) has got a DC-2 in storage:

The airworthy one is not flying as it had a small landing accident last year.
On July 9 the DC-2 was damaged when the left landing gear suddenly retracted, the damage was minimal but the costs of the repairs and replacing the prop is high and hopefully they will get it repaired for this year's flying season.

The Dutch DC-2 has been transported from Den Helder to its homebase of Lelystad (Aviodrome) to be repaired and hopefully return to the skies in 2006.

Australia is home to 3 DC-2's, all 3 were owned by Marshall Airways, 2 are ex RAAF aircraft formerly with Eastern Airlines, the third is an ex KLM/KNILM aircraft, that aircraft is planned for airworthy restoration.

: VH-CDZ still in Australia is the former Confederate Airforce owned aircraft that was denied an export permit and never flew as N8486D in the USA as implied in the earlier posting.

H-AJU 1288 - DC-2 Dutch Dakota Association Schiphol NED is in fact the former Eastern Airlines/RAAF A30-14, another former Australian a/c exported in the 1980's to the Dutch Dakota Assn, it was intended to be displayed as "PH-AJU" but is sometimes quoted as the original "Uiver" although that a/c was destroyed in December 1934 (in Iran?)

O-3 1562 - DC-2 Suomen Ilmailmuseo Helsinki FIN is a fuselage only.

:N41HQ 2053 is a C-41, an off the shelf DC-3-253, (and therfore not a DC-2) but it is the first "DC-3" to be used by the US army aircorp.

:2072 38-0515 C-39 USAF Museum Wright Patterson AFB Dayton OH the C-39 is technically a hybrid design of DC-2 fuselage with the fin/rudder and centre section of the later DC-3, but the C-39 is considered by Douglas to be a DC-2-243.


This suggests 8 complete DC-2 airframes (including the C-39 at USAF Museum) plus the fuselage of 1562 in Finland.
