B-52 @ MCO?

Sun Feb 19, 2006 7:35 pm

Dumb question.

What is up with the Buff at MCO?
History, why its there, other A/C

Ive driven by it a bunch of times while arriving at the airport to catch a flight home. I never remember its there till its too late to go back. (In the rental car bus returning to the terminal)
I was just looking at it on Google Earths sattelite view.

I don't know the history of the aircraft, but I believe that B-52's flew from there when it was Pinecastle Air Force Base. The first X-1 glide flights were at pinecastle also until the program was moved to Muroc AFB (Edwards).

It was Orlando AAF, then Pinecastle AFB, then McCoy AFB. A SAC base for many of those years (with B-52s, of course).

Hmmm,

I guess that would explain the airport identifier.
We always wondered why it was MCO
