Ridley Scott plans new Battle of Britain movie

Award winning British filmmaker Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Martian) is developing a new movie about the seminal 1940 fought Battle of Britain.

Let me suggest that we accept a couple things as "given" ..

#1. This is not a "remake." It is intended as an original cinematic treatment of historical events.

#2. In order to recreate the vast scope of the conflict, any modern production must involve the use of computer-generated effects as a matter of necessity.

Lots of good WW2 movies out in the past few years, some documentary in nature and others not.

I watched Hacksaw Ridge and Allied on flights recently and immensely enjoyed both. The aircraft weren't really central to the story, so mockups or CGI in the background didn't detract from the story at all IMO.

Looking forward to hearing more about this. The original is probably my favourite aviation film (may TTT), so will be interesting to see it differs.

The company I work for built the Westland Lysander for the Allied film. Using many original parts, it took 5 months to create and was very close to the real thing (as that was the instruction from the film company) and it cost a lot of money!

Wonder if we will be asked to make Spitfires, Hurricanes and 109s for the film? Sat by the phone waiting for it to ring....

Haven't seen Allied yet but really?... Hacksaw Ridge? I couldn't get into it. Whether it was the fact that Vince Vaughn took me right out of the movie because he was being (over the top, too big Vince Vaughn-ish), the fact they obviously filmed all the boot camp sequences on a manicured golf course somewhere in Australia, or the fact that the battle of Okinawa seemed so separated from any of the ground shots from below at the bottom of the cliff. It felt like a completely different world! It felt like their was no danger at the bottom of the cliff vs the top. I dunno I notice small nuanced things like that.

THAT being said I'm excited to hear about Ridley's take on the massive Battle. Heres to hoping he employs as many real aircraft as possible and actually films in the air. The former Russell Group (Now Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar) ME-109e is almost ready for flight I hear so that would be cool to see dogfight an actual Mk.1 Spit or Hurricane. Not to mention if you could get a few more Pacific Fighter's Allison V-1610 QEC's made up and bolt them onto the HA.1112s flying in the UK, you could potentially have a flight of accurate looking 109s for the first time on screen.

I've never seen any aircraft-in-motion cgi that didn't look fake. They all move weirdly.

The CGI B-24 scenes in Unbroken looked good.

There was a short clip a few years ago with Mosquitos and Spit's that looked VERY real. Of course, it wasn't particularly dynamic, which is where it usually goes wrong.

Yeah that's the problem - when they actually start to maneuver. When the trailers for Pearl Harbor started being shown I was impressed with what I saw knowing that the planes were largely CGI....but all you saw were plodding scenes of straight and level with a few fast flybys. Once there was actual maneuvering in the movie the planes started to defy physics.

For some reason the movie writers are determined to make the planes do much more than they could - with instantaneous 200G turns and such.

Well let's hope this one is different though I've been disappointed so many times I don't allow myself to hope any more that the depictions will be accurate.

BTW, if you want a spectacular treatment of the BoB, I strongly recommend Stephen Bungay's book "The Most Dangerous Enemy".

The Mossie landing at the end is a clone from the Mossies coming into land in 633 Sqdn.
