Goodyear FG-1D Corsair 88303 N700G FHC getting closer ...

Sat May 27, 2017 8:07 am

Quote from the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/flyingheritage ... =3&theater

"The FHCAM is adding a Corsair to its flying roster this summer! The plane is a Goodyear FG-1D Corsair that saw service in the Pacific during World War II with a Marine Corps unit, VMF-115. The plane will fly for the first time for the public at Paine Field on June 24th, at Pacific Theater Day!"

This is the old Goodyear FG-1D Corsair 88303 N700G that I believe the Ezell restoration shop is finishing up.

The new scheme is going to be real nice BTW

In these indoor photos of the aircraft, it's easy to see the authentic application/demarcation between the glossy/specular sea blue and the flat/non-specular sea blue anti-glare. It's also nice to see that all of the fasteners were painted, as they should be, and not left bare (adds to the authentic business-like look of how they originally were). On Facebook, a lot of people have come under the impression that this is a recent acquisition, or that it is a recent restoration, but Paul Allen originally purchased the aircraft for FHC (now FHCAM) back in the late 90's, and it has been in and out of restoration, at different shops, since then. If you're at the Breckenridge airshow this weekend, you should be able to see the aircraft - some photos I saw of it yesterday at Ezell's show it looking finished/ready to fly (all buttoned-up, wings on, prop mounted, etc.). Ezell has also said that the Slattery Brewster Corsair should be finished in-time for Oshkosh.

At the Breckenridge airport this weekend, I count 7 Corsairs (5 flying and two restorations) - Texas Flying Legends, Friedkin, Cavanaugh, Latshaw, Mid America Flight Museum, FHCAM (resto), Slattery (resto)

Yet another old girl I have very fond memories of from her days with Champlin. Always had a "thing" for the big radial engine navy birds and was very disappointed when the FG-1D and the Hellcat were let go from the museum. Of course in the long run it was for the better, IMHO, since both birds went from static to flying. Can't wait to see the finished product!

PS - It's too bad somebody like Yagen, Friedkin, etc. did not snag the entire Champlin collection when it went up for sale. Be fantastic to see some of the other birds in the collection flying again. A certain P-38M, refitted with its second seat and painted black, would be truly spectacular! Not to mention the Super Corsair and razorback Jug.

Not to mention Champlin's wonderful Great War collection!

I'm always surprised when a static museum is the high bidder for an airworthy collection, or even an individual aircraft. It just seems to me as a matter of economics that someone planning on flying the assets would value them more than someone looking for a static display. I guess maybe the market is so thin that it's just a question of who has the loose cash at the time.

Here is video of the aircraft undergoing its first engine run since the restoration began (21 years since it last flew): https://www.facebook.com/flyingheritage ... 554548666/

It is still scheduled to be making its flying debut in Everett on June 24th.

Man is that thing going to look sweet in formation with FHC's Hellcat or what?!! Speaking of sweet looking Hellcats has the LSFM bird been seen out and about at all since receiving its new paint job?

Is that front part of the rudder painted yellow and matching the yellow spinner? Squadron colors?
