"Armed and Loaded Flags"

During WWII, when training aircraft were armed and their guns loaded, was there not a protocol to have a red flag attached to the pitot tube?

Used to keep dust and bugs out of it. The same goes for aircraft today. I didn't hear about it being anything more than that
