http://www.startribune.com/pilot-dies-i ... 432276773/With the 421 crash in WI (6 fatalities) and the Aztec in GA (4 fatalities, including two children), this has been a very tough weekend for aviation. Prayers to all the families that have been impacted.

Yes, lots of bad news lately including a fiery Cessna 310 crash on a freeway adjacent to John Wayne Orange County Airport last week. Haven't heard an update on the pilot or passenger of that one.

May have been a ferry flight or a recent purchase based on the registration records (my speculation).
Pilot had a TBM Type Rating and an Experimental T-28 authorization.
The newspaper article showed him in a TBM, I wonder which one he flew?

This plane had some serious engine problems judging from the debris all over the back of the canopy and the vertical tail. It also reportedly hit right wing low and cartwheeled tearing off the wings and breaking off the engine.
Here are a couple close-up pictures from the crash site. This was a very violent and powerful crash and I don't know if the pilot could have survived, but the apparent lack of a crash helmet pretty much assured that outcome..

The oil on the aft fuselage/tail looks more like spray from when the QEC, Oil Tank, Oil Lines, etc. were torn off during the ensuing crash and cart wheel.
