2017 CAF Gathering of Warbirds - Waukesha, WI - Gallery

Tue Jul 04, 2017 5:07 pm

Hello,

I’ve posted a gallery of still images and video taken at the recent 2017 CAF ‘Gathering of Warbirds’ - Waukesha, WI on May 27th, 2017. The gallery is lighter on stills, as I chose to shoot primarily video at the event.

Enjoy!

Hi Dan, that is a different Mig 17 that's on Courtesy's site. The Waukesha birds n-number ends in X and the Courtesy Mig in Z. I don't think Jeff's is for sale.

Interesting. Apparently Courtesy has it backwards and the FAA registration is actually "correct" for a change. It is not a Mig-17, but rather a Polish-built copy of one - actually a Lim-5. On that basis, Courtesy should have identified it as a Lim-5 (you know, like a "Mig-17") not the other way around as they did.

Another general FYI for everyone; I used to have a Russian-born business partner and besides teaching me the proper pronunciation of Stolichnaya as in vodka, he also taught me that to the Russians, all of their aircraft designations are pronounced as words, not as consecutive individual letters - just like a "Mig" is not an EM-AYE-GEE. Accordingly a Su-27 is not pronounced as an ESS-YOO-27 but rather a SOO-27 and a Be-12 is not a BEE-EEE-12 but a BEE-12 and so on. Thought that everyone just needed to know that...otherwise your day might not be complete.

I've always said "Mig", but also "AYE-ENN", "ESS-YOO" and "EYE-ELL" etc. I think because MiG's the only one I really heard while I was growing up!

Thanks for letting me down gently, Dave!

That means I'm buying the first round again at OSH, doesn't it... :drinkers:

At the time we were concerned that there was a mechanical problem, but a short time later the gear was up and everything appeared ok. I don't have any photos of the gear up flybys, however....

Similarly, I understand the proper pronunciation of Japanese Army Air Force aircraft like the Ki-43 is "Key-Forty-Three," rather than "Kay-Eye-Forty-Three." The "Ki" is the last syllable of the word "Hikoki" (airplane) not an acronym or abbreviation.

Great pics, BTW. I just saw Vlado flying Baby Duck in the Heritage Flight with an F-22 at the Battle Creek Airshow on Tuesday.

Judging by the paint scheme, he's doing a P-47 imitation.
Or perhaps a BT-13 doing a P-47 imitation. :)
