Something Big just groundlooped at Oshkosh

Fri Jul 28, 2017 12:42 pm

Something polished metal just ground looped on the south end of 17. Doc was flying an hour ago. Both Tri-motors and B-17s are on the ground. Stay tuned.

Runway 36 is in use so if anything ground looped, I would think it'd be closer to the north end, not the arrival end.

Second, it's not DOC because they're live streaming most of their flights and you can see the landing on Facebook and it had no problems.

So, instead of posting things "As They Happen", let's take 10 minutes and figure out FACTS first. We're not the media here, we have no "need" to be the first to report anything.

Saw it on the EAA web cam and it is of the appearance/type as that of a small high-wing GA aircraft, such as an Aeronca.

Speaking of groundloops...

The National Park Service's Fairchild FC (a large antique) groundlooped right in front of me as it landed on Sunday. The landing looked fine until the airplane pivoted 90' and aimed right at me (sitting along the fenceline in the warbird area). I was on my feet and ready to make like Jesse Owens, but it went around another 225' as it exited the pavement and came to a stop. After collecting his (her?) thoughts, the pilot joined the line of taxiing aircraft. I, on the other hand, have a permanent crease in my folding chair...

LOL -maybe it will iron out. Pilot didn't mention it when he registered. Today's ground loop was cleared in 30 min or so - no smoke/flame. Appeared that the left main collapsed. Couldn't ID the type from Warbirds - appeared to have a red fuselage and square wing tips.

I'll second that. The only thing a speculative thread like this does is put everyone on edge, needlessly worrying about friends with big shiny airplanes at OSH. Better to wait and provide solide, verifiable information when it becomes available.

How did "something big" and "polished metal" morph into a (likely fabric covered) Aeronca?

I'm all for getting news out quickly, but before it does anyone any good it has to be correct. Take a moment to confirm before pressing the send button.

When I did TV News, we never went with initial info gleaned from listening to police scanners...we waited for verification from another source (police, one of our own people or a credible witness).

Sorry about the false alarm. I blew it. From the P-63s where I was standing, there appeared to be fire trucks and. Bare metal aircraft off the runway. It turned out to be a Beech 18 obscured by the fire trucks. It was parked in front of the air show line. I sincerely apologize.

Now..now..Big fella, don't be so hard on yerself. The aroma of avgas permeating yer nosrtils, sun beating down on ya, so many Warbirds filling yer senses it makes a starving dog in a slaughterhouse look tame. I mean, you didn't do nuthin' really bad...like stand on top of a plump child to get a better view. In all these years one leetle goof is nuttin'...we hardly noticed

No worries. I've made a few clangers here in my time, too.
Maybe you could edit the title in your first post, though (see my subject line) - that's the usual thing the mods prefer.

While on the subject of incidents at OSH, what was the deal with Doc doing the go around after it's performance on Friday? Fire trucks rushed out to the scene then I saw Doc do a pass down Runway 27 and didn't see it return after that. Someone said that it had a braking issue, but must have not been that bad if it went back up Saturday.

Problem was with FiFi on the ground, which landed before Doc.
