Lockheed 12 accident in Belgium

Mon Jul 02, 2018 4:51 am

The newly arrived Lockheed 12 had a landing accident. After landing, it left the runway (caught by wind?) and hit a hangar. No one was hurt luckily.

Hard to tell for sure, but it looks like they landed with the tailwheel unlocked...

The Lockheed 12 in the video is S/N 1252. The Sidney Cotton 12 is S/N 1203.

Unfortunate accident. Hope they can fix is up quick and get it back in the air soon.

A Lockheed 12, or at least the front part of one

Wow!
That sucks. Glad no one was seriously hurt, but WTF!
Look at the video. The rudders deflect fully to the left just before the tail touches down, then they stay there.

Fast forward to 1:25 for the touchdown.

Unfortunate accident. Glad it looks like no one was hurt beyond pride.

Does the L-12 have a steerable tailwheel? If you listen, in addition to the rudder being hard over as pointed out, you hear screeching of the tailwheel as it touches, suggesting it's being dragged instead of rolling along the direction of travel.

Very odd. It's tracking straight until the tail comes down. And the tail wheel appears to be straight.

Even if it was unlocked it wouldn't cause an immediate yaw like that.

It's as if as soon as the tail came down someone hammered on the brakes, and the left one grabbed or even locked.

Darn shame. Extremely expensive repair.
