peta would have freaked over this 1960's b-58 ejection seat

according to a recent air & space smithsonian magazine letter from a veteran b-58 hustler crewman / reader peta.... (people for the ethical treatment of animals) would have had a cow (pardon the pun  ) over a 1960's usaf test regarding the b- 58 hustler bomber's escape capsule system. the usaf used live brown bears in ejection tests. when the bear was seated in the ejection seat / ejection capsule, yogi's internal organs were of the same basic arrangement & spinal configuration as humans, as were their center of gravity equal to most men. needless to say the bears suffered tremendous trauma & compression fractures of their spines. it must have been agonizing for the animals, but ultimately saved lives for our servicemen in defense of our country during the cold war. not funny by any point.... just an fyi for you guys. regards, tom
