P-51D at Eglin AFB

Wed Apr 10, 2019 1:14 pm

For the past several days there has been a silver P-51D in the pattern. Does anyone have any insights as to what it is doing here other than boring holes in the sky - not that I mind...

Wouldn't be Tom Cruise's Mustang/"Top Gun 2" filming, would it?

Sound like similar recent use of piston warbirds in the (AFFTC Test Pilots School?) training curriculum. I seem to recall a TP-51D (edit: Stallion 51?) was used a while back.

I wish I knew what was going on. The sight of F-22's, F-35's, F-16's, F-15's in the pattern and then along comes this beautiful P-51 and its Merlin sound... is priceless.

It could be there under contract of some sort. If so, I hope it's long term.

Red Nose is out there flying USAF Test Pilot School students. She flew half the class last week, and is staying a second week for the rest of the group. Each class goes on a two week long "field trip" to various locations, to fly different types than they routinely get to at Edwards. Eglin happened to be a stop this time.
