This scene of a B-17 going into a spin, with the crew bailing out, from Memphis Belle has me wondering: Has this plane ever been IDed, and what was the fate of the crew?

I've always thought that shot was interesting...almost too good to be accidental.
The shop had to be from a high squadron and five through the level where the camera's aircraft was.

A tribute to the men who won the ultimate victory 75 years ago, this movie will be showing in select theaters May 23rd and will be available on demand on HBO June 7th.

Fathom Events ran this documentary on limited release screens around the country last night. I saw it in Olympia WA.
The restoration is utterly amazing. But I think it was a case of technical expertise coupled with an unclear idea of the narrative.
I found it more than a little self-serving at the end. The last 15 minutes was a discussion with the people who’d made it, and veteran reactions as to how good it was. This is what puts good documentary film makers apart from something like this; you never would have seen Ken Burns’ “Civil War” series ending with mutual back-slapping congratulatory segments for the people who made it. The video segments with the vets and follow up was jarring in how you went from this amazing color movie film to what seemed like so-so quality video.
Still, they did an amazing job with the film they’d had so it was well worth seeing on a big screen. It’s a shame that none of the crew of the “Memphis Belle” are alive today to see the restored film of them in action.
My understanding was they just restored parts of the original Bill Wyler film not used in the 1944 movie. I just wish they’d restored the entire Memphis Belle movie that way!
I will be getting the DVD when it comes out, though.

I saw it in one of the local theaters last night ... along with maybe a dozen other people. Shame it wasn't promoted better here. They Shall Not Grow Old was sold out a week in advance at the same theater.

I thought the documentary was incredible. The restored footage is amazing and the the idea of having the veterans tell stories over the footage was poignant and captivating. Even the German propaganda footage that was shown beforehand was outstanding. Seeing it on a big screen was absolutely worth it.

I agree that the last 15 minutes was a little self-serving, but there were still some interesting parts such as the veteran who was showing the original equipment he still had and how it worked.

Yeah, at the theater I went to, you have to reserve your seats ahead of time. So much green in the grid when I got my ticket earlier that day. Maybe a dozen people were there total. Ironically, there was a guy on each side of me and nobody else in our row. The guy to my right and I found that ironic (though it was in the center of the row).

Bravo! I won't get to see it tho...yet. I took HBO for long enough to watch the final Game of Thrones season and the Chernobyl miniseries but canceled the subscription yesterday. I fergot The Cold Blue was playing this soon...thanx to technology tho my brother is going to burn me a DVD.

Most such subscriptions, if you cancel them, they don't immediately disappear. If your subscription was for one month free, say, and you cancel it on the 15th day, you still have 15 days of viewing left. Try it. (It's worth it. I watched the film 10 minutes after it became available on HBO.)

Thanx Stephan, yup I squeezed every bit out of it I could till it ran out. I even got a day of credit back to my account when HBO died Saturday nite. I let the first 2 episodes of GOT go by before I started the HBO so I could squeeze in Chernobyl with Comcast only getting me for 1 month...A twofer+! Last Wednesday I realized I had only seen 2 seasons of Boardwalk Empire, so I binged 3 seasons of that last weekend as well. I can squeeze a dime....
