JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A vintage airplane crashed Tuesday morning at the end of the runway at the Jerome County Airport.

The Jerome County Sheriff’s Office could not release the condition of the pilot. Jerome Rural Fire District and sheriff’s office responded to the crash. Magic Valley Paramedics also responded.

A sheriff's deputy said it appears the 1952 fixed-wing aircraft went down the runway, attempted to take off, went up in the air and then belly flopped on the ground. He said there was no fire but the breaks were smoking. Emergency responders were notified at about 9:19 a.m.

The National Travel Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have been notified and are believed to be coming to investigate.

KMVT will continue to follow this story. Check back for updates.

Guessing he tried a downwind takeoff.

It was in John Lane's shop there in Jerome for some work, I saw it there last November when I stopped there while flying my Ercoupe home.

Truly moronic reporting.

It's not that bad...you can't expect a (probably young) reporter to give chapter and verse on a Corsair. Sure, the "belly flop" is questionable, the rest is pretty standard these days...no one releases much info on pilot or his condition.

Speaking of morons, many of Jerry's breaks were smoking.

I actually prefer "belly flopped" to the usual "crash" news headline or chat title that I saw elsewhere for this exact incident. When I see crash I expect the worst.

Glad the pilot is OK. Not the usual oils stains you see with a catastrophic engine problem...come to think of it that looks like the least stained Corsair I have ever seen....

We've had two "crashes" locally for the past two days. Yesterday at Hooks a Cessna flipped over after it strayed from pavement onto soft turf while taxiing. Today a Cessna flipped over while landing on the grass strip at Wolfe Airpark saturated due to recent heavy rains. Sigh...

This would be a good opportunity to repair the cowling by remaking it as a proper AU-1 cowling.
