WW2-era RAF markings

Sun Apr 09, 2006 10:42 am

Does anyone know when the wing roundels on WW2 RAF aircraft changed from the blue-red style (Type I) to the blue-white-red (Type II)?

I've seen quite a few photos showing late-wartime Spits/Typhoons/Tempests with upper wing roundels that are of the blue-white-red style, as well as a number of images showing wing roundels of the same type but also with the yellow outer ring.

The most recent wartime reg that I have is AP 2656A, dated October 1944.

Clearly an additional change was made later in 1944 or early 1945.

Thanks,
Chris

The Type C roundels (on upper wings) with the thin white ring between the red and blue areas started to appear on 2nd TAF aircraft in the ETO in early 1945. At the end of hostilities a thin yellow ring was added around the outside of the roundel and this applied to both uppper and lower wing roundels.
