Douglas A4D-5 (A-4E) Bu 151036 is ex Barbers Point and is now sitting out in Kauai at the Veterans Center across the street from the airport. This is the only preserved aircraft on Kauai! She probably has a pretty intense Vietnam history luring under all that paint...
Photographed yesterday as I waited for my plane home...
Interestingly this one is close to Bu 151022 in production, the A-4F that “rolled off” the elevator of the USS Ticonderoga when she was sailing off Vietnam on 5 December 1965. This was a significant event.
“Dozens of nuclear weapons were lost at sea over the decades because they were on ships, submarines, or aircraft that were lost. On December 5, 1965, for example, while underway from operations off Vietnam to Yokosuka in Japan, an A-4E aircraft loaded with one B43 nuclear weapon rolled overboard from the Number 2 Elevator. The aircraft sank with the pilot and the bomb in 2,700 fathoms (4,940 meters) of water. The bomb has never been recovered.”
