Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress 41-9177 mishap ...

"Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress 41-9177 was delivered to 34th BG, Pendelton May 7, 1942; transferred to Muroc May 16, 1942; transferred to Alamogordo Jun 18, 1942; transferred to SAAD July 12, 1942; assigned to 19AF at Occident Aug 9, 1942; transferred to Fort McAndrew, Sep 19, 1942; wrecked at Sydney, Nova Scotia Oct 16, 1942. Salvaged.

This was one of a number of B-17s used for anti-submarine using Air-to-Surface Vessel (ASV) radar. The nose and underwing aerials were part of the homing system onto a radar target. The masts on the upper rear fuselage supported antenna for the the side-ways looking search component of the system."
