Please help! need photos for book on vintage flight jackets

Mon Apr 17, 2006 9:27 am

Hi guys. My name's Paddy Middleton and I'm based on the Scottish Borders in the UK. Have a big love affair with vintage aviation, especially military aircraft. That has spilled over to an interest in WWII flight gear (A2s, B3's, M442a's, Irvins..etc), and now I'm taking it a little step further by attempting to put together a vintage flight jacket book (but it's still in its infancy).

I've been getting some shots of me wearing vintage flight gear, but at this stage I need HIGH RESOLUTION photos of vintage warbirds standing, or in the air. As I am currently covering USAAF and RAF Jackets and gear, I could do with photos of planes such as the Mustang, B24, B17, Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster...etc.

The sort of shots would be angled shots of aircraft in the air flying over. Or, close ups of a prop or tail fin, or angled shot of the plane at rest on the ground. They will be used as a backdrop to my ugly mug in uniform and flight gear!

Although friends have sent me some great shots of warbirds that they have taken at shows, they just don't have the resolution needed.

Here's the crux. I need 250 to 300 DPI on each photo. Each photo has to be around the 30 to 60mb, saved as a TIF.

I'm seeing some stunning photos of Warbirds on this site and the talent coming through is breathtaking, but I just cannot seem to get pics in the resolution and size I need.

Guys, can you help an aviation warbird and jacket nut out? Please let me know. Thanks in anticipation, PADDY.

Are you familiar with Derek Nelson & Dave Parson's book
"Hell-Bent for Leather: The Saga of the A-2 & G-1 Flight Jackets"?
(1990 Motorbooks International)

Just a big thank-you to all those who responded with photos

Guys, just a quick message to say a BIG thank-you for going the extra mile in helping my project book on vintage military aviation clothing/jackets.

I'm really excited to be working on this and highlighting some of the classic examples of aircrew jackets from WWII and before. Some of your photos of classic aircraft such as Spitfires and Mustangs will just set the photos of the jackets off to a tee. So I cannot stress how much I appreciate the offers of help with some cracking high res photos of warbirds!

Regards, PADDY

I don't have your resolution, my camera is only 6.3 MP and that's about 17MB in TIFF format. I think you should look for someone who scans slides at about 12MP or more...
I do know these websites of clothing manufacturers:
http://www.flying-jacket.com/
http://www.flying-jacket.com/
http://cirrus.co.uk/
Maybe they can provide you with images that they use for their own marketing.

I have the Eastman Leather Clothing RAF 1940 Pattern, Battle of Britain jacket. Too bad I don't have the right camera or you would have a top model in your book. 8)
