P-40F prototype 41-13600 - 4 or 6 gun wing?

Sun Dec 29, 2019 3:23 am

Hi all

From what I’ve read, the first P-40F was converted from P-40D s/n 40-360 (Baugher). I’m wondering if it retained the 4-gun “D” wing configuration, or if it had 6 guns fitted? I’ve only been able to find three pics of it, two early on with regular tail and another later with the longer rear fuselage and experimental tall tail:

And yes the one pic from the front quarter does appear to show no armament fitted....which might make sense.... or it could maybe be the work of the censor’s airbrush?

Any further pics/info on this aircraft would be great if anyone has any.

Thanks!

Greg V.

Edit: doesn’t seem to be any trace of that typical bulge on the underwing gun access panel in any of those pics.... did the P40-D have those?

yes, the gun access door on P40D was narrower than on E model and up, and there was bulge also.

The Prototype P-40F had a two wing guns, most of the photos of it have had the censor remove the guns. I have included an uncensored copy for you. (sorry about the size)

Great! Thanks for the info guys!

Buz that pic is great, many thanks. This is for a modelling project so the size is much appreciated. Any other pics would be fantastic as well if you have any!

You guys think the serial number was also a censor victim? Or think it would’ve been on the tail like normal? And is it odd that there aren’t any stars on the lower wings? I see the US ARMY there though.

Thanks again

Greg V.
