Seems its just a failed engine start. Why didn't they run a restart checklist?

Right.

So maybe automated airlines are not a great idea.

Sometimes they just did booster tests and let the missile/drone/unmanned vehicle meet a fiery demise in the desert or ocean. I seem to recall some early Loon and ZELL test that did just that.
