Randy Sohn has gone West

Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:07 am

Just got the news that Randy Sohn passed away yesterday. An incredible pilot, story teller and friend.
I will post memorial info when it becomes available. Blue Skies Randy.

Sad news. His famous Warbird Notes provide a wealth of knowledge and insight and have been a huge help to me. I always appreciated that he took the time to compile them and make them available, just one more way of giving back to the community he obviously loved very much.

Blue skies and tailwinds Randy!

Ken

Loved reading his technicals on care and feeding of engines and machines. I was recently reading a forum from this fall about crop dusting where he made a few comments bout back when...What a sad loss. Tailwinds Mr. Sohn...

Of course, I'll ditto the comments already made. And who can forget his place in CAF lore with FIFI's ferry flight?

Good memories...sad loss.

He was a straight shooter, I crewed many PPE's with him and learned a lot. Blue skies Randy...

Somewhere buried deep in storage is a VHS I shot of Randy saving B-17 "Sentimental Journey"'s bacon on a nasty crosswind landing at Crites Field in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in the early '90's.

Randy claimed the tower told him "15 gusting to 25", but the way the trees were lashing in the background it looked like 35 gusting to 45. The only reason he was landing crosswind was because the upwind runway was shorter than the CAF's mandated minimum. Randy asked me for (and I supplied him with) a copy of the tape to convince the talking heads at CAF that the policy needed revision.

As I think of it, the other copy of the videotape I made I gave to Tony Buechler... :(

Good memories...sad losses

Nice guy and he brought tremendous talent and a safety culture to the warbird community. He knew how to fly many of the biggest warbirds.
