That is interesting, thank you for posting. I see that the guy that it is registered to lives about 20 miles away from me, I believe that he had or has a Mk1 Spitfire registered to him too.

All depends on what you start with. If you have a lot of material I'd say rebuild. Its not a restoration. Nor is it a new build.

So now, whether it's a rebuild, a restoration, or a new build, it will now also be a conversion.

Spitfire rides are very popular over here, there are four different organisations selling all kinds of packages and they always seem to do a brisk trade, Aero Legends being one of them. If MJ444 is going to be so extensively rebuilt that it's going to fly again, then it may as well be as a two-seater.

My vote is for them to restore to flying. IT's fine if it doesn't have an overwhelming amount of original material. The most original Spitfires, like the most original WW I aircraft will someday be tucked away safely in museums never to fly again. At least this way it brings honor and attention to the guys that served in WW II. It will be flying for future generations that never knew the WW II generation or kids or grandkids of that generation.

As long as the Spitfires that have remained substantially intact since the war aren't converted - I imagine anyone proposing putting a back seat in MH434 would be hanged from the nearest lamp post (the original Vickers conversions are of course fine!). If somebody wants to build up a two seater from metal confetti recovered from a crash site, it's absolutely fine with me - and I would happily take a ride in one if offered!
