Douglas AD-4 Skyraider of VA-115 loses its engine on landing on USS Philippine Sea after being damaged by flak during a mission over Korea on December 1, 1950. Hopefully the pilot suffered only minor injuries. (Source: Reddit)

There's "losing an engine" and then there's losing an engine.

The fact that the pilot leaped out and later was standing up is remarkable.

Same aircraft 6 weeks earlier. The pilot in the mishap was Ensign Denzel Leland Crist and he suffered first and second degree burns to his face. He went on to fly for TWA for 35 years. He passed in 2008.

It is amazing the fireball as the engine separates and then, poof the fire is out (or so it seems). Glad the pilot got away relatively safe!
