I had two uncles at Pearl Harbor. My Uncle Al was on the USS California and my Uncle Howie was on the USS Antares. Both survived and lived a good long life.

Got this yesterday in my feed from the Wisconsin State Journal:

Clearly ladies and gentlemen, we are NOT doing our job! Guess we can give up on the politicians and educators.

At least the article didn't say it was our fault.

"It was already dark on December 8th, when Enterprise and her escorts slipped into Pearl Harbor, after two days of a fruitless wild goose chase, and her air group already bloodied by dramatic friendly fire incidents on the very day of the attack. Enterprise did not plan on staying long - except for the fighters which had been sent forward so as to augment the combat air patrol over Oahu, she retained her scout bomber and torpedo groups, as nobody was released ashore. This was truly to as quick a pit stop as possible, as men were busy shuttling supply around. By 0600 on December 9th, she was leaving Pearl like a ghost, as the rising sun in the East and the smoke from Battleship row gave a gloomy feeling to the scene. She is seen here passing the wrecked seaplane base on Ford Island, on her way back to the open seas. She was heading for the unknown, as US command, still somewhat shell-shocked following the attack, was left pondering its options and wondering what to do next with her, Lexington and Saratoga. But whoever was witnessing her leaving must have certainly known, deep down, that she was going to be quite busy for some time - and that she was indeed, for the whole duration of 1942, and way beyond!"

Seeing that painting reminds me of a quote by John Paul Jones...

I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm's way.

Yes, the quote is associated with the Pearl attack thanks to the John Wayne film, but let's think of what it must have been like back then...not knowing what they were up against, just knowing it was one of the first days of a long war.

I’m certain to be corrected but I think the original quote was by John Paul Jones. He had some success a few years ago.

Please read the first line of my post, I attribute it to John Paul Jones.

I was trained as a journalist when that was still a respected profession. :)

And to any younger guys out there, John Paul Jones was neither a member of the Beatles nor a Pope.

Don't worry, we know our music history and can name all four (or even five) Beatles by heart. John Paul Jones is, of course, best known for the Led Zeppelin part of his career. (:-))

“If they only had my AR-15 back then those Nazi fighter jets wouldn’t have stood a chance” … ask any kid.

"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

Yes, yes you did. And everyone knows John Paul Jones was in the first iteration of the Monkees. Got dropped by management before they hit it big. Brought some other Jones from the UK in.
