Identity of F9F-5 USS Midway Museum

Sat Feb 12, 2022 6:47 pm

The F9F-5 Panther at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego is marked as BuNo 141136. This is incorrect as 141136 is for an F9F-8 (F-9J) Cougar. Does anyone know the correct Bureau Number for this airframe?

That is a good question. Every online source I have found either gives the wrong number, or "bureau number unknown". I thought maybe it was one that was displayed in a park in Mesa, AZ, but that one is now at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Plus it is an F9F-5P.

Surely there is a data plate or stenciling on the airframe to get the right number.

Even the museum curator doesn't know the true identity.
I suspect it will remain unknown.
