Mr Mustang- Dick Phillips - passed away in 2020. His son mark has been putting together a book of his pictures of surviving Mustangs. As part of that effort he has compiled a 3 book set of Dick's photos of Military Mustangs. This is the Facebook listing for that collection-

In the process of editing "The Last of the Wild Horses" I have identified thousands of military Mustang photos that don't fit the format. I am very pleased to announce the release of a 3 volume set of books with hundreds of these photos. Most never seen before. Included with the book or books will be an internet based page where all of the photos will be available. Users will be able to access the photos for personal or commercial use (with credit)The volumes are: WWII, U.S. post WWII, foreign mustangs

When something is listed as part of a "collection," what does that really mean? I don't think it means that the person responsible for the "collection" actually took the photo, does it? Does the term "collection" suggest that there is ownership of the rights to that photo?

BDK, yeah I’m going to guess he collected these, they are now public domain so no copyright anymore, hence the book coming out now. It doesn’t seem to be his own pics he took.

Agreed, as I've seen all the photos posted elsewhere. I'm just glad he took the time and effort to collect them. I've also got a "Monster Load" of collected photos. many originals, most harvested internet copies. lol

But I'd rather take the occasional heat for posting pics as opposed to no one ever seeing them. Too much history to hide.

Yeah, that isn't the way copyright works. If this is the work of other photographers that Dick's heirs found in his files and are now offering for money, that is a straight-up ripoff and I wouldn't give them any of my money. Also, they have no right to license others "for personal or commercial use(with credit)" - credit to who? To the original photogs whose work they are ripping off, or to them? - so use at your own risk.

When something is listed as part of a "collection," what does that really mean?

It means that you cannot remember where it came from and are therefore unable to properly credit the copyright holder.

Back when promotional images were freely distributed by aircraft builders and others and people amassed huge collections of these, you would get journalists going to one of these collections first as it was an easy way to find photos for use in an article. Through such occasions, the collections became mini-photo archives and it usually led to a credit, even though the photo was originally taken by someone else. Over time, these collections became historic archives in their own right and sometimes they hold more images than the official archive at the manufacturer does for a specific type. It doesn't change the basics of copyright though.

I agree, use at your own risk and be sure to do your own research about the origins of an image.

I'm not sure of the provenance of the photos in these 3 books. I have not seen them yet. Mark has the price under $50 for all editions.
