Road Trip to the HAG at Geneseo NY

Fri May 26, 2006 11:03 pm

On May 24th I took a road trip out to the 1941 HAG at Geneseo to meet up with a few of the guys that post on the message board over on the Museum site. I also used the trip to make a few stops along the way to see a few of the aircraft on display in different towns. The first stop was to see the A3D-1 that is now on display near Amsterdam, NY at the Fulton county Airport. This a/c was once on display on the USS intrepid in NYC but was moved with several other a/c to locations around the country.

The next stop was going to be Rome NY to the former Griffus AFB but it turned out after getting off the wrong exit I skipped to stop #3 to find the A-4 on display in Oriskany NY. It is located at the Oriskany Museum and due to the same size of the town not very difficult to find. The a/c looked very well taken care of and in great shape. If anyone who reads this know or is involved in the museum GREAT JOB! Some day I will go back to tour the Museum.

So after driving around a bit and no luck finding Griffus Tech Park or what ever its called now, I headed off to Geneseo before the guys I wanted to meet had left.

Next came Geneseo, what a great place. I hooked up with Joe, Sorry Joe I did not catch your last name, and was given a great tour of the Memphis Belle (B-17G N3703G). Slowly I found several of the group that I was there to meet and we talked inside the Belle for about 45 minutes. Good time, but it was a bit warm.

Next was off to the main Hanger, It appears that the HAG’s C-47A has a lot more work before it is flying again, but I could be very wrong. The last time I assumed that about a restoration it was up and flying in Chino a few months later (the P-39 that went to England). I really hope I’m wrong and it is up and flying soon. We were also treated to watching a UH-1 doing some training or something at the field. With a 3+ hour drive ahead of me I said my good byes and off I drove, to Wagman to pick up some White Hots for the upcoming weekend (anyone want to advise me the best way to cook them????).

I decide to make one more go at the Griffus B-52 and consulted the map to see if there was a close up to try and get a fix on the Location. I had my lead and off I drove. As I pulled up to where the front gate was, I remember the few time I went to the open houses there and was treated but the sight of B-52, FB-111 and F-4 demos. How I miss those days. After about a mile I could see the shape of the B-52G tail and the joy of a successful hunt. The B-52 was well cared for and the grounds around it were set up fairly nicely. I was also treated but the sight of a 109th LC-130H doing touch and goes at an airport close by. So I set off for home.

Tim,

Thanks for the pics. Like the first one of the Belle with blue sky behind.
Missed her when she was not at the show there last year.

Tim,

Thanks for sharing the pics !

I know that last year a number of appearences by this Memphis Belle were sponsored by JEEP. When you were talking to the B-17 guys ~ was there any mention of a 2006 ?

No I did not hear anything, that is the first I heard of the Jeep Sponsor for 2005. It looks like they are getting to a lot of show this year but I'm not sure if they are being sponsored by anyone.
