Which Zero at Chino?

Sun Jun 11, 2006 8:05 pm

Saw this long-winged Zero in a POF hangar during the Chino airshow. Is this the ex-CAF bird being prepared for retirement in Hawaii :( or a new project?

Hi August--

Your attached pic is doing the "red-X" thing at the moment...but if that A6M is pale grey with white striping and coded EII-102 in red on the fin, that's the ex-CAF bird, restored in the 80s by Bob Diemert and fitted with an R1830 out of a Dak. Reg was NX58245 at least as of the one and only time I saw it, the wonderful 1994 Batavia Wings Of Eagles airshow--still the only time I've seen a Zero in the air. Boy, that thing could climb...

Cheers

S.

It's the Paul Allen example, the last of the 3 Russian (re)built airframes to be completed.

The ex-CAF one is lurking in Aero Trader's hangar.

Thanks Mike. In that case I'm glad to have seen it. For those of you who can't see the pic, right-click the red "X", select Properties, and copy the URL into your browser address bar. Once it's in your cache it will show up on the board itself as well. Sorry about that, I'm still figuring out how to post images on this board and I guess direct links to webshots is not the way.
