15th Air Force, B-17 #44-66276

Mon Jun 26, 2006 12:45 pm

I'm doing some research and was hoping some of you out there could help me find some info on the B-17 serial # 44-66276.

According to the AAF website there is a MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) #7299. It was assigned to the 15th A.F., 463rd B.G. and was lost on July 21st, 1944. If anybody can provide any additional details as to the name of the plane, bomb squadron, and the names of the crew, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

John

Serial number 44-66276 is not applicable to a B-17.

Hmmm...I don't know what to make of it?

I double-checked the MACR database on the Army Air Forces website and it lists:

Missing Air Crew Report: #7299
Date: 7/21/1944
A/C Type: B-17
Serial #: 44-66276
Unit: 463rd B.G.

Maybe it's possible the website is wrong and it was a B-24? What's surprising is that I went on the 463rd B.G. website and researched the missions for the year 1944. There was one mission listed for 7/21/1944 which was to Brux, Czechoslovokia, but no aircraft were listed as missing?

If anybody can shed some light on this...I'm all ears.

Thanks!

John

I don't have it in front of me but Roger Freeman's B-17 Story encapsulated histories would probably clarify...the serial is probably a typo of 44-6627 or 44-6276. If an answer is not here by then, I'll look it up tonight and post.

This site http://www.xs4all.nl/~rioolpw/douglas_longbeach_03.html shows 44-6276 shot down but no details.
