Vintage Wings of Canada – Fly Day on July 1st, CANADA DAY!

Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:41 am

Vintage Wings of Canada (VWoC) will be holding it’s second Fly Day, this Saturday July 1st. We hope the weather cooperates so that we will actually be flying this time. July 1st is of course Canada Day, and the VWoC Fly Day will be one of many events in the area. So if you are looking for something to do on Saturday the Ottawa area is the place to be!

The gates of VWoC will open at 10 AM to allow access to the picnic area adjacent to the ramp. At that time aircraft will be towed out of the hanger for your viewing pleasure. Bring your cameras as the lighting around that time is especially good. The gates close at 2 PM.

When flying operations commence the aircraft will be moved out of the way so you can view the start-ups and movements.

Right now the plan is for the Staggerwing to fly out around 11:30 AM for a short trip to the Canada Aviation Museum. Other airframes like the Hurricane, Spitfire and/or Mustang will depart around 11:45 for the Canada Aviation Museum as well. The aircraft will be on static display at that time.

In the event of the flying operations being grounded due to weather, VWoC will turn the event into an open house where you will be able to come inside the hanger and view the aircraft. So rain or shine you will be able to come to VWoC and see something!

There is a potential added bonus for those attending. The Canadian Warplane Heritage will be coming to Ottawa with their Firefly and Canso for a flying display at the Canada Aviation Museum on July 1st. They will be based out of Gatineau. I have not been able to confirm if they will be on display on the VWoC ramp before the shows, but that is a possibility.

Again VWoC invites you attend our Fly Day, this Saturday July 1st. All that we ask is that you read the following guidelines and tips to help ensure you safely enjoy your day.

Regards,

• Vintage Wings of Canada has designated the first Saturday in June (3rd), July (1st), August (5th) and September (2nd) as Fly Days so members of the public can bring a picnic to the airport and catch a glimpse of some vintage aircraft flying. This is not an air show.
• Washrooms will be available at the Gatineau Airport Terminal building.
• Food services are also available at the Gatineau Airport Terminal building.
• Picnic tables will be provided on a grassy area adjacent to the active ramp inside the perimeter fence. We do not have an estimate for expected attendance so you may wish to bring a lawn chair.
• Attendees are required to respect the rope barriers.
• Attendees are requested to make use of the garbage bins provided if you should have any refuse needing disposal. Loose debris on the ramp can cause damage to the aircraft and put crews at risk.
• The events are dependent in weather and aircraft availability.
• Don’t forget your sunscreen! The grassed in area will has no shade at this time. Bring water as well. I understand that a hot summer is predicted.

Mike,

What happened today? I was over at the CAM from about 11:30 until 3:30. I saw the Canso and Firefly at about 2:20, but that was it, apart from a great display by the Buffalo. At one point at about 3:00 I thought I saw the Spifire up over Gatineau, but I never saw anything over at the CAM.

Were there servicing problems today?

Too bad, but otherwise another great Canada Day at the CAM. Thanks to the Buffalo pilot - he sure put that thing through its paces. Enjoy it while they last - soon the Buffalo will be gone since it is due for replacement too.

About 4pm I saw the Canso heading back to Hamilton. I was at the marina in Port Hope on Lake Ontario and it was about 500ft. just off the coastline. Great sight to see.

The Citabria, Taperwing and Staggerwing (the classics) did make it to the CAvM. I think the Firefly did two flying displays at the CAvM. Both the Firefly and Canso were static at VWoC. Honestly for photography purposes, VWoC was the place to be, and I don't think I am being biased here. The public were granted more access to the ramp this time, and the trial format will be discussed prior to the next fly day.

Ollie posted a nice selection of pictures. I am working on Air Show Ottawa pics right now. I am slowly catching up, but Geneseo is looming on the horizon.

Yes I will admit Mike that I did miss a great opportunity to see the Potter collection up close again..but I did witness a very very nice past by the Firefly on the crowd line at the museum on Saturday morning...I can still hear the RR Griffon in full glory...it was a great photo op..

And I was hoping for a look into the CAM hangar and I did get a peak!! :D
