Military turns out at new Hangar One museum site

Although its doors have unofficially been open since February, the Naval Air Station Glenview Museum officially opened with military pomp July 8.

Located at 2040 Lehigh Ave., the museum is on the outskirts of the former Navy base, which closed in 1995. On display are artifacts from the nearly six decades of base history, including a recovered engine from an Avenger Torpedo bomber that took off from Glenview and crashed in Lake Michigan during a World War II qualification run.

"There has been a lot of interest and support for us to continue operation telling the history of the Glenview Naval Air Station," said Bill Marquardt, president of the Glenview Hangar One Foundation.

The foundation had operated a temporary museum for nearly a year in rent-free quarters provided by OliverMcMillan, the developer of The Glen Town Center.

But foundation volunteers packed up the museum's uniforms, models, photos and other memorabilia and searched for another location after they heard that space might soon be leased.

The Glenview Village Board granted a conditional use in January to allow a museum to occupy the 1,050-square-foot space the foundation had eased in the industrial building on Lehigh.

A number of scale models of aircraft stationed at and flown from the base were built in the last few years just for the museum, Marquardt said.

The museum's site is still considered temporary, however, while the foundation raises money for a facility it hopes can be found in The Glen.

Public viewing is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and weekdays by appointment. For more information, call (847) 657-0000.
