Aero-News Alert: One Known Fatality In OSH Taxiway Accident

Sun, 30 Jul '06
ANN REALTIME REPORTING 1400 EDT: Aero-News has learned there is one confirmed dead in an accident on the ground at Wittman Field Sunday afternoon, where a Grumman TBM Avenger taxiied into an RV aircraft ahead of it on the taxiway.

The accident occurred approximately 200 yards northeast of the control tower at Oshkosh, during the last day of AirVenture 2006 and what is traditionally the busiest day for departures from Wittman Field.

The EAA reports two people were onboard the Canadian-registered RV, with the other person sustaining unknown... but apparently non-life-threatening... injuries. The type of RV is not yet known, nor is it is clear if the plane had a tandem, or side-by-side, seating arrangement.

Crews on the scene say the TBM's propeller struck the RV's vertical stabilizer, and cut into the smaller plane's fuselage.

The NTSB has been called out to investigate the mishap. ANN will have more on this story as information becomes available.

That's just terrible news.

Would this conclude that the passenger in the RV was struck by the prop?

OUCH!!!!!!!!

Sad news.

P.S. Thats one reason I don't really want to go to Oshkosh. Too many aircraft accidants! For wonder there aren't dozen considering the amont of aircraft that are there! Just too risky.

I was at Oshkosh in '99 and witnessed a terrible accident when an F-4U Corsair ran into a Bearcat while taking off. I don't know to this day if the Corsair pilot survived or not.

The Corsair pilot in that accident survived , but was severly injured and may have even had lasting effects on his health. Haven't heard about his state of health in a few years.

I was there also, Laird survived. He also won a legal settelment due to this accident.

I have been to Oshkosh in 1999 and 2002 both times I saw som crashes or almost crash. But this will not keep me away. Hopfully in future it will be less accidents there.

what a darn tragedy. There was another incident the night of the 23rd, a couple was killed. Still, it is a amazing that more people arnt killed every year.

I just missed this accident, I saw the TBM taxing a few mins before, and started heading tords the van, I guess it happened about the time I got in the van.

That accident with the Corsair that ran into the Bearcat was Howard Perdue, right?

Pardue was flying the bearcat N14HP, Lad Doctor was the pilot of the Corsair N712RD, Tom Wood was the other Bearcat pilot and Jim Read was flying the other Corsair

What TBM was involved in the mishap today?

What will happen to the pilot of the TBM when things like this happen?

Depends who has deep pockets, who is determined to be at fault, and what the insurance situation is.

Can't be put in jail for an accident unless criminally negligent I would guess (I'm not a lawyer) but could definitely get sued.

Which TBM???? Blue or white/gray??

Very sad indeed. :(

Regardless of the money I am sure that pilot will be haunted by this for the rest of his life.

The only photo I've seen shows what looks like a grey cowling on the TBM. It's behind some emergency trucks, so it's hard to tell.

Randall-

It was Tri-State's overall Dark blue airplane. It wasn't Tinker.

Me and my family were there on Friday and I just heard about this accident this morning on the local news. It's unfortunate to hear news like this but it's all too common at EAA. When you consider all the aircraft coming and going and the amount of air traffic, it's a surprise that there aren't more accidents and fatalities every year. If I remember correctly I believe Oshkosh becomes the busiest airport in the world for that one week with a plane landing or taking off an average of every 30 seconds.

Does anybody know if the Avenger sustained serious damage?
