Vintage Wings of Canada - Hurricane Arrival and Fly Day

The Hurricane Has Arrived!!!
The Hawker Hurricane, RCAF s/n 5447, formerly owned by Mr. Harry Whereatt arrived at the Vintage Wings of Canada hangar today (2 August 2006). The Hurry made a grand entrance via a flat bed truck and was lifted down to the ramp by a crane. It is now tucked away in a corner of the hangar.
Fly Day – Saturday, 5 August 2006
Vintage Wings of Canada (VWoC) will be holding our third Fly Day, this Saturday August 5th. Our last Fly Day was held on July 1st with the sun shining and the Canadian Warplane Heritage visiting with their Firefly and Canso. The weather forecast says we are in for another beautiful day this Saturday.
The newly acquired Hurricane will be the star of this event, even if only static, but it certainly will be on display.
As for guests flying in during this Fly Day there will be a Pilatus P-3 and Harvard 4 visiting courtesy of the Lacombe family of Matousche, Quebec. As well the Pitts Specials from Smith Falls will be on the ramp.
In addition Bob Fassold may be in attendance with his DHC-1 Chipmunk and if so will give rides for a fee. Bob’s Chipmunk is a former trainer of the Royal Canadian Air Force. If you have never had a ride in a warbird before, this could be your chance.
A group of re-enactors will also be visiting in costume along with their vehicles and there will be associated displays. In addition there will be two vintage cars from members of the Antique Automobile Club of Ottawa (AACO) on display. A 1936 Auburn Cabriolet owned by Rick Soderstrom and a 1958 Edsel owned by Ross Truemner.
You may wish to know the Mustang and Spitfire will not be at the hangar on this Fly Day. VWoC is supporting the Yankee Air Force Museum’s Thunder Over Michigan air show near Detroit, and these two airframes will be there.
Feel free to come out and enjoy some time at Vintage Wings. The gates of VWoC will open at 10 AM and remain open until 2 PM. In the event of the flying operations being grounded due to weather, VWoC will turn the event into an open house where you will be able to come inside the hangar and view the aircraft. So rain or shine you will be able to come to VWoC and see something!

• VWoC wants to enjoy yourself during your visit, but in the interest of safety we ask that you pay attention to our staff and volunteers. From time-to-time they may ask you to leave an area if an aircraft is being moved. Safety comes first!
• Washrooms will be available at the Gatineau Airport Terminal building.
• Food services are also available at the Gatineau Airport Terminal building.
• Picnic tables will be provided on a grassy area adjacent to the active ramp inside the perimeter fence, so feel free to bring your lunch. We do not have an estimate for expected attendance so you may wish to bring a lawn chair.
• Attendees are requested to make use of the garbage bins provided if you should have any refuse needing disposal. Loose debris on the ramp can cause damage to the aircraft and put crews at risk.
• Don’t forget your sunscreen!

So we went and came back. It was a wonderful flight, a loose formation getting there and back.
I had the chance to be given a ride in the D17S for my help in bringing aircraft for display at the open doors...
The Spit was there, since it couldn't make Detroit due to a technical problem. The Hurrie and the Mustang were gone to ToM.

those are exceptionally beautiful shots of the Beech Staggerwing. That is my father's favorite aircraft.... The plane is just plain elegant....and your photo's do it great justice....

Thanks for the pictures of the Hurricane. I visited Harry Whereatt three weeks ago on his farm. We had a good chat and he let me sit in the Hurricane. This Hurricane was based at Yorkton Sk. during the war. It's purpose was to shot down Japanese balloons. Harry has a picture of the airplane in the hanger at Yorkton with Mr. Don Hearne sanding in front of it. It still carries the markings "71" and "StarDust" on the engine cowling. Mr. Hearne is a member of the Vintage Aircraft Restorers. This group restores WWII aircraft at the Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw Sk. Mr. Whereatt is the original civilian owner of a Harvard Mk. 4 and has a Tiger Moth. He sold his Lysander to an owner in Saskatoon Sk. I hope to get pictures at the airshow in Saskatoon this month. Please keep us up todate on the Hurricane at it's new home. I hope to make it to the Ottawa area and visit the Canadian National Air Museum and stop by and see the Hurricane in it's new home.
